On August 19, Vietnam and China signed a protocol on quarantine for fresh coconut export products, witnessed by the two leaders, General Secretary and President Tô Lâm, and General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping. This is an important step forward, opening up the Chinese market for Vietnamese fresh coconuts. With a cultivation area of approximately 175,000 hectares, mainly in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of coconuts
The signing of this protocol is expected to increase fresh coconut export turnover by 200-300 million USD in 2024, with the potential for continued strong growth in the following years. Fresh coconut exports not only bring economic benefits but also promote the sustainable development of Vietnam’s coconut industry, while improving product quality to meet international standards.
The Vietnam Coconut Association reported that there are about 100 businesses involved in the coconut industry across the country, with more than 40 enterprises focused on production and deep processing. Bến Tre is considered the coconut capital of the country, and many businesses in other provinces such as Tây Ninh, Hậu Giang, Long An, Khánh Hòa, Bình Thuận, and Bình Định have also invested in technology and organic raw material areas for export purposes
Coconuts are one of the crops with high economic value, as all parts of the tree can be used to produce various products. In 2022 and 2023, the export turnover of coconut products reached approximately 1 billion USD. After the U.S. opened its market in August 2023, Vietnamese fresh coconuts were officially allowed to be exported to China.
In addition to fresh coconuts, Vietnam exports more than 10 other types of fruits and vegetables to China, including dragon fruit, longan, mango, jackfruit, banana, and durian. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) will continue to closely coordinate with Chinese authorities to ensure a smooth export process, while also supporting businesses and farmers in fully leveraging the opportunities from the signed protocols.
